Kimberley McLennan Kimberley McLennan - Scotland

    Age started dancing?
    4

    Why did you start?
My mum Maureen had been a Highland dancer and took me to a Highland Games to watch. I was really impressed and loved it so much that I started up classes straight away with Maryanne.

    First teacher & current teacher?
    Maryanne McCreadie and Linda Nixon

    Competitive highlights?
Winning the Scottish and British Championships and going to Canada for the first time with Linda when I won the North American Championship in Montreal in 2001. Also coming 5th in the World Championship at Cowal this year (2002).

    Favourite competition?
    Cowal.

    Why is this your favourite?
The atmosphere is brilliant and I feel good having the chance to dance with the World's best dancers.
The way the competition is set up makes my adrenalin pump and gets me really excited.
Also having the chance to meet new and old friends is such a laugh. It is brilliant for socialising.

    Non-competitive highlights?
Dancing at major events and venues such as Murray field, Ibrox and Love Street, especially when choreography is involved.
    I love that!

    Favourite dance & reason?
The sword dance because of the challenge and I love challenges.
It is probably the most nerve-racking dance but this makes it more enjoyable and it is such a relief when you finish without touching it.

    Funniest dancing memory?
The events leading up to me competing in Montreal.
First of all my brand new pumps burst right along the sole just before I was due onto the platform to dance the Fling. We had to rush to a stall, buy a new pair and rush back again only to discover that I had a split on the seam of my sock, and the button on my kilt which holds my jacket down had popped off. Everyone fussing round about me was so funny.
Thanks to Francis Paterson's safety pins I managed to hold together long enough to get through the dance!
