Stephanie Grant Stephanie Grant - Canada

    Age started dancing and reason?
I started at 4. My 2 older sisters danced and they tell me I used to follow them and dance around the sword. According to my mom, I was trying double highcuts at 18 months.

    Current Teacher?
    Janice Macquarrie

    Competitive highlights?
Winning the Canadian Champioships twice, and coming first-runner up at Worlds three times.

    Favourite competition?
    Antigonish Highland Games
This is my favorite competition because it is in my home town and it is the best games in the Maritimes. All my family and friends are around and it is pretty neat to dance in front of them all. It is the oldest running highland games outside of Scotland, so many people come from all over. The entertainment during the weekend is amazing as well.

    Non-competitive highlights?
Two similar events stand out more than others. In 1997, I was one of the guest solo dancers that performed with the Ceilidh Dancers in the Edinburgh Military Tattoo. It was so overwhelming to dance in front of 9000 people, all eyes on you. Then in 2002, I was part of the Canadian Team that performed in the Tattoo, along with dancers from Australia, South Africa, NewZealand, and Scotland. To meet and perform with so many talented dancers for 4 weeks was awesome.

    Favourite dance & reason?
    The Sailor's Hornpipe.
I enjoy doing something a little different than highland, and the intricate footwork and elevation are exciting.

    Funniest dancing memory?
I haven't really had that many funny things happen to me, but when I think back to Worlds in 1994, I tend to laugh. Before I danced in the finals, my mom was wishing me luck and started to cry. That was ok, but when I came off, she was crying again. She cried before and after all my dances...by the time the reel came around, I thought she was losing it. She was just so overwhlemed with the whole event, she couldn't contain her emotions. My dance teacher was sitting beside her the whole time giggling. She'll never live it down.
